Cabanas

Down to the N125 via the eastern route. Turn right towards Tavira then left after a few hundred metres at the sign for Cabanas. There are very regular little ferries plying from the eastern end of the waterfront but they do not operate in winter time. Costs around 1 euro per person.

Head down to the N125 (main coast road). Turn right in direction of Tavira. Carry on towards Faro past Tavira. Go through Luz de Tavira and 2km or so further on you see a tall strange evergreen tree on the left (its actually a mobile phone mast in disguise!) Turn left immediately after this - signed Pedras de Rei. A little train takes you to the beach - 1 euro each way, or you can take the 10-15 min walk by the side of the track.

OUR FAVOURITE BEACHES

Down to the N125 and turn left. Go on towards Vila Real for 4-5km until you see a sign to the right 'Cacela Velha'. Take it. Just before Cacela Velha you see a sign to the right marked 'Fabrica'. Take it. The little ferry is less crowded thatn at Cabanas but only operates in high summer. DO GO TO CACELA VELHA. The church on the hill overlooking the sea is sensational! When the tide is out you can walk along from Fabrica to the steps at the bottom of Cacela Velha.

This is the first beach to the east which does not require a ferry crossing. Plenty of parking and a long stretch of sand. Travel east along the N125 towards Vila Real and its clearly signed some 2km beyond the Cacela Velha turning

The beach at Tavira is accessed by a ferry which plies from Quatro Aguas. Go to Tavira and on crossing the bridge towards the market, turn right before the market. Continue going until you go under the bridge and in a southerly direction. This road runs alongside the river to Quatro Aguas. The beach is a long sandy beach with dunes to the rear. The ferry does not operate in winter time.
